Project Proposal for Computer Literacy Programme at 26 Colleges in Polpithigama

The 26 colleges are selected for this project situated in an area governed by Polpithigama Divisional Secretariat in Kurunegala district. This area has been rightly identified as distinctly remote, extremely poor and which is often struck by harsh and inclement weather conditions of our country.

However, what is happily and fortunately seen here is that these colleges have been blessed with tremendously capable and talented students, who, if provided right and prompt educational opportunities, would certainly become great assets to our country in future.

With the present trends of globalization and open market economic system, computer literacy has played a significant role in our country and in every educational institute computer knowledge has now become indispensable and sine qua non especially for job seeker.

Some of the students of these colleges too have felt the dire need of such education and some of them make a tedious journey all the way to Kurunegala to attend the computer classes and these may be counted as fortunate ones. But there are many more talented ones in these colleges whose such hopes have not been realized on account of their poverty. Neither do they have money for travel expenses nor could they afford high class fees for such computer courses. They are so much ignored and marginalized by the government that only one fourth of them even currently receive "SAMURDI" benefits leaving many others in dire financial predicaments.

The future of these children is quite bleak if their talents are not properly unearthed and developed at the right time, especially in computer literacy and knowledge, as it is invariably demanded when seeking job opportunities.

The Lions Club of Colombo Golden Jubilee has already completed on its own a professional survey in this area where we have discovered that in the identified 26 colleges about 53 computers will be required if such a beneficial project to be satisfactorily initiated and executed for the benefit of the deprived children of these colleges. Further, the principals of these colleges too have made an appeal to us in writing in this regard.

Hence, we, the Lions Club of Colombo Golden Jubilee earnestly arid humbly solicit your kind assistance to help us begin this task and we are very much confident that you will respond to this request in the positive, considering the highly beneficial aspects of this project in favor of the deprived children of this remote area of our country.

Special Note:
Apart the above project we will support the programs of District Governor C1 (2008/ 09)
