Sanitation Project in Pitipana and Suburbs - 98 Latrines (Challenge to Grave Intestinal Problems and Diseases)

This project is to be executed in Pitipana and suburbs-coastal area-for the needy beneficiaries. These are people who have been living from hand to mouth from whatever they earned from the sea. However, the community is in need of immediate economic assistance to combat grievous sanitary problems that are causing intestinal problems and disease. Standard toilets will greatly enhance living conditions and decrease the mortality rate, improving health and livelihood.

The primary purpose and concern of this project is to put up 98 latrines in Pitipana and suburbs. The village economy has been environmentally determined by its ocean-lagoon site and situation almost directing substantial numbers to be involved in fishing and its associated activities. Anyhow the beneficiaries of this project are poor of the poorest.

By providing minimal decent living conditions for these affected people they would be able to come back to their normal life in every aspect. They would be protected from various deadly diseases that may strike them in time to come increasing in the number of deaths. They would be encouraged and strengthened psychologically to get back to their former life from the present traumatic feelings and restart their fishing industry with greater confidence and determination which would help them stand on their own feet economically once again. A project of this nature will certainly assist these people to live healthy with greater human dignity in the society and safeguard the moral order of the day and the stability of the society.

Apart from the above facts we like to mention here another alarming threat to the morality of the society. Habitual rapes to young girls and sexual abuses are reported. Youth hide in mangrove and wait till their chance comes! This is a grave and common burden and threat to the mothers of these families as they have been protecting their young daughters throughout the day. Therefore danger to lives and moral threatening of girls are rather alarmin.

Apart the above project we will support the programs of District Governor C1 (2008/ 09)
